Memorial Healthcare Board of Trustees Welcomes New Members
Monday, August 5 (2024) – Owosso – Memorial Healthcare has welcomed three new members to its Board of Trustees, who will serve three-year terms. These new members include Bryan Marks, Dr. Hazem Tabbaa, and David Wakeland.
Bryan Marks is the owner of the “Great Lakes Family of Companies,” which includes Great Lakes Fusion, Great Lakes Ready Mix, Great Lakes Rental and Supply, and Great Lakes Fabrication and Machining. He began this journey in 1998 with the founding of Great Lakes Fusion, initially employing just two people. Since then, the organization has grown to multiple companies with over 65 employees, specializing in heavy civil construction, excavation, concrete ready-mix supply, equipment rentals and sales, construction and landscape supplies, and industrial machining and fabrication for industrial, commercial, and residential markets.
“Memorial Healthcare’s mission is meaningful to me because health and wellness are essential for a vibrant and sustainable society. Memorial Healthcare’s commitment to excellence, teamwork, and innovation ensures that our community benefits from having a top-tier healthcare system as a permanent partner. As the largest employer in our county, Memorial Healthcare plays a crucial role in providing excellent healthcare and supporting our local economy,” said Marks.
Bryan’s hobbies include hunting, fishing, maintaining his family farm, enjoying the outdoors, and beekeeping, which has taught him the importance of bees in nature and sustainable farming.
Dr. Hazem Tabbaa is a fellowship-trained and board-certified Gastroenterology and Advanced Interventional Endoscopy physician. He received his medical degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and is double board-certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology. Dr. Tabbaa served as Chief Resident and Fellow at Franciscan Health and completed a fellowship in Advanced Interventional Endoscopy at Parkview Health in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
“Memorial Healthcare’s mission is deeply meaningful to me because it aligns perfectly with my career as a leader in innovation. In medicine, staying updated with the latest advancements and guidelines is crucial, embodying a lifelong commitment to learning. I am passionate about continuous improvement and strive to embody this commitment daily.”
Dr. Tabbaa was elected Vice-Chair of Memorial Healthcare’s Medical Staff in January. He is keenly interested in the executive side of hospital administration and believes that physician voices add significant value. With his background in medical education and involvement in various hospital departments, Dr. Tabbaa aims to offer valuable input at the Board level.
Dr. Tabbaa is happily married with three children. He enjoys traveling and spending time with his family in his free time. He is also dedicated to sports, particularly basketball and soccer, and loves exploring new restaurants and watching movies.
David Wakeland is a distinguished professional with a rich background in the petroleum industry and extensive community involvement. He began his career as a Department Manager at Marshall Field’s in Chicago before transitioning to Wakeland Oil Co. in Owosso, where he became president in 1994. In 1999, he purchased 100% of Wakeland Oil stock and expanded the business further in 2004. Though he sold the wholesale agreement in 2012, he retained all company-owned retail and commercial properties.
“Memorial Healthcare’s mission is meaningful to me because it combines providing high-level healthcare services locally with supporting an economic engine for the county. This dual role is vital for our community’s well-being and prosperity,” said Wakeland.
“My values align closely with Memorial Healthcare’s core values, particularly in promoting a healthy lifestyle through preventative services and education. I am committed to contributing to our community’s health maintenance, prevention, and education, especially in addressing today’s healthcare challenges, such as obesity and related illnesses. Being part of a solution that aligns with Memorial’s goals and core values is very important to me,” adds Wakeland.
David is married with three adult children. He is a parishioner at St. Martha’s Church and a member of the Knights of Columbus. He enjoys running, snowboarding, and golfing.
Memorial Healthcare is governed by a volunteer Board that maintains fiduciary responsibility for corporate assets and policies. The Board of Trustees, consisting of 16 members, includes representatives from the community, Auxiliary, Foundation, and Medical Staff.
