Memorial Healthcare Welcomes Congresswoman Elissa Slotkin

OWOSSO, Mich., September 18, 2023 – U.S. Congresswoman Elissa Slotkin visited the Memorial Healthcare campus on Tuesday, September 5, touring Memorial Healthcare’s Cancer Center as well as its Neurology-Orthopedics-Wellness (NOW) Building.

Leaders from Memorial’s Cancer Center and pharmacy emphasized preservation of access to critical cancer-fighting drugs. Congresswoman Slotkin has been a champion in protecting rural access to medications in Congress, introducing the Ensuring Access to Lifesaving Drugs Act, requiring drug manufacturers to label drugs with the longest scientifically-supported expiration date to expand the supply of usable drugs.

The congresswoman also visited Memorial’s NOW Building to learn more about the personalized care being offered, including its medically-based wellness center, growing neurology specialty practice, research activities, and cutting-edge robotic-assisted orthopedic surgical offerings.

“As hospitals confront a number of challenges, from staffing issues to critical drug shortages to insurance headaches, I was so impressed this afternoon by Memorial Healthcare Hospital,” said Slotkin. “One part that stood out was their concierge approach, which helps patients stack their appointments and even offers child care. Plus, they have a great gym for preventative care and physical therapy that is open to the public — all of which is a game changer for rural care. As the only hospital in the area and the largest employer in Shiawassee County, these health care leaders understand their community’s needs best, and I’m looking forward to partnering with them at the federal level.”

The visit also included a conversation with executive leadership about the challenges rural healthcare providers face in the post-pandemic environment.

“Engagement with our elected leaders serving us in Washington is critical in raising awareness about the world-class service we provide patients here at Memorial,” said Memorial Healthcare President and Chief Executive Officer Brian Long. “Congresswoman Slotkin has shown a genuine interest in the challenges facing rural hospitals, and we are grateful for her ongoing partnership.”
