Memorial Healthcare Receives 5-Star Ratings from The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS)

OWOSSO, Mich., August 6, 2024—Memorial Healthcare, an independent, community non-profit hospital in Shiawassee County, is among the top performers according to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) in their July 31 Care Compare website update. CMS star ratings are generated by a variety of healthcare quality metrics, ranking one to five, with five being the highest score.

Memorial Healthcare’s Home Health Agency achieved a 5-star rating for its overall patient survey performance. Only 13 of 300 home health agencies in Michigan earned this top distinction. Home Health performance metrics are based on items such as care provision, communication, and home safety.

Memorial Healthcare was one of only five hospice agencies out of 164 in Michigan to earn a 5-star patient survey rating, outpacing the state and national averages in all survey categories. Measured categories include communication with family, getting timely help, emotional support, pain and symptom management, and training family to care for the patient.

Memorial Healthcare’s Long Term Care Unit has earned a 5-star Overall Rating based on nursing home performance in three categories – health inspections, staffing, and quality measures.

The hospital’s Overall Star Rating (clinical) has increased to 4 stars – based on performance in metrics of quality, such as treating heart attacks, pneumonia, readmission rates, and safety of care. Memorial Healthcare exceeded expectations in patient survey performance as well and scored higher than most mid-Michigan hospitals in several categories, including Nursing Communication, Doctor Communication, Staff Responsiveness, Medication Communication, Discharge Information, and Overall Rating of Care.

“In order to be successful and provide the level of service we strive for, it’s imperative that we maintain direct, comprehensive communication across the board. This feeds directly into our patient care, prioritizing quality and safety to ensure that our staff and our community feel supported,” said Brian Long, president and CEO of Memorial Healthcare. “We continue to exceed expectations in patient experience through our service-first mentality and steadfast dedication. This recognition wouldn’t be possible without the drive and thoughtfulness of the entire Memorial Healthcare staff.”
