Suffering from diabetes is painful, and patients need physicians who will help them manage their disorder in an empathic manner. The endocrinology providers at Memorial Healthcare take the same compassionate approach as other providers at the hospital, treating them like family to build lasting relationships. Patients throughout the state of Michigan rely on Memorial Healthcare for trustworthy diabetes services.
What Is Endocrinology?
Endocrinology is a medical field that deals with the system that controls hormones. Hormones facilitate communication between parts of the body and are fundamental to physical functions, such as metabolism and sleeping patterns.
The endocrine system is made up of various organs and glands that help with specific bodily tasks. For instance, the pancreas is the primary organ involved with diabetes. It rests inside the abdomen and features areas called the islets of Langerhans that contain hormone-producing cells. These cells ensure the body has enough energy to survive and produce enzymes to assist digestive efforts. In patients with diabetes, the pancreas struggles to do these jobs.
The endocrinologist is the physician who treats and diagnoses disorders of the endocrine system. The field of endocrinology comprises multiple human functions, and some endocrinologists focus on a specific area of care, such as:
- Diabetes and metabolism
- Pediatrics
- Oncology
- Thyroid disease
- Reproductive issues
- Gender affirmation
- Neuroendocrinology
- Nuclear medicine
