What is Rheumatology?

Rheumatology is a medical specialty that focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and management of conditions affecting the joints, muscles, and connective tissues.

Rheumatologists treat a variety of diseases, including:

  • Arthritis, such as rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis
  • Autoimmune diseases, such as lupus, scleroderma, and antiphospholipid syndrome
  • Musculoskeletal pain disorders, such as fibromyalgia, tendonitis, and back pain
  • Osteoporosis
  • Gout

Rheumatologists use a combination of physical exams, lab tests, and imaging studies to diagnose conditions and create personalized treatment plans. Treatments can include medications, injections, physical therapy, and other procedures.

Rheumatologists must complete a rheumatology fellowship after residency, pass an exam from the American Board of Internal Medicine, and maintain their certification every 10 years. They also need to complete a certain number of continuing education hours each year.
