Memorial Healthcare to Host a Free Hernia Screening in Flushing

Monday, April 6 (2026) – Owosso – Memorial Healthcare is pleased to announce a free hernia screening event for community members on Wednesday, May 6 in Flushing. This event is designed to raise awareness of abdominal wall and inguinal hernias, support early detection, and provide expert guidance on treatment options.

The screening is ideal for individuals experiencing symptoms such as a noticeable bulge, pain, or discomfort in the abdomen or groin; those with a family history of hernias; individuals who regularly engage in activities that increase abdominal pressure, such as heavy lifting, chronic coughing, or straining during bowel movements, or anyone previously diagnosed with a hernia who is seeking additional medical advice.

Hernias are a common condition affecting millions of people each year. They occur when an internal organ or tissue pushes through a weakened area of muscle or surrounding tissue. While some hernias may not cause symptoms, others can lead to discomfort, pain, and potentially serious complications if left untreated. Early detection and proper medical care are key to effective treatment and management.

Event Details:
Date: Wednesday, May 6, 2026
Time: 5:30 PM
Location: 1510 Pierson Road, Flushing, MI (next to Kroger)
Registration: Please RSVP by May 1st by contacting Melissa at MNeuhaus@MemorialHealthcare.org or (989) 729-4780.

Following a brief informational presentation and dinner, private screenings will be conducted by Memorial Healthcare general surgeons Dr. Sasha Spencley and Dr. Joseph E. Testa. Each screening takes approximately 10 minutes and includes a thorough exam along with time to discuss any concerns. Participants are encouraged to wear loose clothing.

“Our goal is to make care more accessible for our community and encourage people to be proactive about their health,” said Dr. Joseph E. Testa. “By offering this free screening, we’re helping connect individuals with the information and resources they need to stay healthy and address concerns early.”
