Memorial Healthcare Celebrates Advanced Radiation Technology

Memorial Healthcare recently hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the installation of an upgraded Varian TrueBeam® linear accelerator (LINAC) at the Memorial Healthcare Cancer Center and to unveil new signage at the center which features recognition of a longstanding partnership with The Karmanos Cancer Institute.

The advanced radiation therapy system represents an almost $6 million investment made possible through Memorial’s longstanding partnership with the Karmanos Cancer Institute at McLaren Flint. The technology is now fully operational and serving patients, enhancing the precision and sophistication of radiation treatment available locally.

“Today marks an important milestone for Memorial Healthcare and, more importantly, for the patients and families we serve,” said Jorri Tremain, Chief Financial Officer of Memorial Health System. “Through our partnership with McLaren Flint and the Karmanos Cancer Institute, we are strengthening and advancing the high-quality cancer care already available in our community. This upgrade ensures patients continue to have access to leading-edge treatment close to home.”

The Varian TrueBeam delivers highly targeted external beam radiation therapy for cancerous tumors and certain benign conditions, including advanced capabilities such as Stereotactic Radiation Therapy (SRT/SBRT), with the goal of reduced treatment timelines while better protecting surrounding healthy tissue.

Through the partnership, oncologists with the Karmanos Cancer Institute manage Memorial’s radiation oncology program as a valued component of Memorial’s comprehensive in-house oncology team, bringing specialized expertise, seamless integration, and advanced treatment capabilities to patients in Shiawassee County and surrounding communities.

“I’m pleased McLaren leadership continues to invest in the latest patient care technologies available to residents of Shiawassee County,” added Dr. Hesham Gayar, Medical Director of Radiation Oncology for the Karmanos Cancer Institute at McLaren Flint.

In addition to radiation oncology services, the Memorial Healthcare Cancer Center also offers medical oncology, infusion, hematology services, and comprehensive cancer support.
